Beginning your child’s dental journey
Do you have a little one in your home that’s getting ready to have a toothy grin? Help your mini-me learn to love caring for their smile and start a life of regular check-up visits. We’ve got tips to help you know where to start with your child’s dental health. Check them out.
When should my child’s first dental appointment be?
We recommend that you bring your child in within six months of their first tooth or on their first birthday, whichever comes first. Many parents ask this question. The dentist will do a basic check of the mouth and try to identify any potential issues with the growth of the jaw and soft palate. Baby teeth are more susceptible to decay than adult teeth because they are more porous, so early intervention is critical as we help ensure those teeth stay healthy.
Getting my child started.
The earlier you introduce children to tooth brushing and oral health the better. There are baby-friendly books out there to broach the topic and make learning fun. Ask your child where their teeth are and talk about brushing. The minute their teeth start coming in, help them brush twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or baby toothbrush and plain warm water to brush. Above all, be consistent.
Make brushing their teeth fun!
Children love to mirror our behavior, so why not make tooth brushing a family activity? Brush your teeth while they brush theirs. Closely supervise the child’s steps to ensure safety and the building of healthy habits. Let them practice the motions of brushing on their own, but then take a closer look and help them really brush properly.
Make brush time a fun part of the child’s day by first brushing and then playing a game or participating in their favorite playtime activity. Try brushing and then singing a song together to add to the fun! Instead of “row, row, row your boat,” make it “brush, brush, brush your teeth.”
Choose a great dental office that you trust.
You want to be relaxed and comfortable when you visit the dentist. If you’re feeling good, your child will also feel good about the visit. The best way to get this positive experience is to take your time finding the right fit. Find a dental office that is conveniently located to home or your child’s school. Look for an office that can work around your schedule with flexible appointments. Whether you need an early morning, evening, or Saturday appointment, it should work in your schedule. Don’t settle for anything less than caring, compassionate, and experienced staff and dentists. Don’t hesitate to go in and talk to them about what to expect.
